Recently it has strongly affirmed the phenomenon of the EMO, a cultural trend that has actually orgine in the '80s as a musical genre related to punk rock (emo is short for emotional-hardcore).
Today, the EMO is above all a young vogue, mostly adolescents, characterized by a particular look: close-fitting jeans and t-shirt, skater shoes, long asymmetrical fringes and black painted eyes. However, the trend is not just an aesthetic problem but also a "crossroads of texts and notes but also of confessions, with their wherterian accents, with space for emotions, without censorship for the sad ones and for those with more or less explicit references to suicide "(Corriere della Sera, July 7, 2006). In a pessimistic view of the world, suicide and masochism are recurring themes in the lyrics of emo; in many cases emo-boys have come to really commit self-punitive actions, such that in the youth jargon "sharp object" defines all objects (from glass to razors) that emo used to cause injury, especially at their wrists.

Negli ultimi anni si è affermato con forza il fenomeno degli EMO, una tendenza culturale che ha in realtà orgine negli anni ’80 come genere musicale affine al punk rock (emo è infatti l’abbreviazione di emotional-hardcore).
Oggi l’EMO è più che altro una moda giovanile, prevalentemente adolescenziale, caratterizzata da un look particolare: jeans e t-shirt strette ed aderenti, scarpe da skater, lunghe frange asimmetriche e occhi truccati di nero. Tuttavia la tendenza emo non è solo una questione estetica ma è anche un “crocevia di testi e note ma anche di confessioni, segnate da accenti wherteriani, con spazio alle emo-zioni, senza censura per quelle tristi e con riferimenti più o meno espliciti al suicidio” (Corriere della Sera, 7 luglio 2006). In una visione del mondo pessimistica, il suicidio e il masochismo sono argomenti ricorrenti nei testi degli emo; in molti casi gli emoboy sono arrivati davvero a commettere gesti autopunitivi, tant’è che nel gergo giovanile “sharp object” definisce tutti gli oggetti (dal vetro ai rasoi) che gli emo usano per provocarsi ferite, soprattutto ai polsi.
