A rounded prison that cuts the will

Jeremy Bentham, Panopticon blueprints, 1791
Presidio Modelo Prison, Cuba
At the beginning of the XIX century Jeremy Bentham, one of the major exponents of the utilitarian current, says in the philosophy of law that the law has the task of promoting and encouraging good actions and punishing with strictness those who instead frustrate individual and common usefulness (that in Bentham’s vision coincide).
From this point of view he imagines and promotes the Panopticon (from pan, all, and optikon, to observe): a particular type of prison that thanks to its circular shape allows a only keeper to check all the prisoners, which are not able to determine whether they are observed or not. The feeling to be continually spied and controlled by an invisible entity, in Bentham’s opinion, bends prisoners’ will of infringement, modifying definitively their character.

Gothic: The Sharp Architecture

 Duomo di Milano

The Gothic is the architectural movement that remarks the concept of sharpness.Majestic cathedrals, full of peaks and pinnacles, bold arches and buttresses, protruding drip monstrous, intrusive, and the surfaces decorated, large windowscolorful, pointed arches that give a sense of bewilderment and exciting thrill.
