When the rubber beats the wood!

wooden wheel

tyre
One of the greatest invention of human history is the wheel, rounded object able to turn around a central axis. From the IV millennium B.C. to the 18 th century A.C. wheels were made by wood: in the centuries it was improved lightness, by using the spokes, and rotation, by using iron hub, but the essential raw material for ages is the wood. In 19th century it appears the tyre, a polymeric element that is mounted on the metal structure and it allows to have a better adhesion, a greater endurance to shocks and jolts and it substantially increases trip comfort. The invention of tyre therefore has completely superseded the use of wooden wheels, that in transportation have no more applications: in this case, the industrial product has beaten the craft one.

How to cut a plank!

a traditional saw
a modern chainsaw
Heating, furniture, tools and ornaments: the wood is always an essential raw material in human life. However in the centuries tools used to cut the wood are deeply changed: from saw, a simple tool used as an extension of human arm, moved exclusively by physical strength, it changed over to chainsaw, in which a combustion engine moves a toothed chain with small blades. The motorized version obviously offers the advantage of a lesser effort, greater effectiveness and greater speed, the simple saw on the other hand has greater lightness, better portability, lower cost and it doesn’t  depend on external power sources. In the case of this sharp object therefore, industry hasn’t beaten crafts, but old and modern tools still coexist.
