One of the most famous myths of Greek mythology is that of Perseus, Son of the god Zeus and Danäe, daughter of King Argo. The most famous episode of Perseus’ life is the fight with Medusa, one of the three monstrous Gorgons and guardian of the underworld, whose gaze was able to petrify people. It is said that the king Polidette asked Perseus the head of the Gorgon as wedding gift, with the secret purpose to kill him, but Perseus, thanks to the shiny shield that Atena gave him, could see in the reflection Medusa without be petrified and cut her head by his sword.
In this mythological episode hero’s weapons best represent our concepts: the sword, sharp tool par excellence, and the divine round shield.
Uno dei miti più celebri della mitologia greca è quello di Perseo, figlio del dio Zeus e di Danae, figlia del re Argo. L’episodio più celebre della vita di Perseo è lo scontro con Medusa, una delle tre mostruose gorgoni e custode degli Inferi, il cui sguardo pietrificava le persone. Si narra dunque che il re Polidette chiese a Perseo la testa della gorgone come dono di nozze, con il fine segreto di eliminarlo, ma questi grazie al lucente scudo donatogli da Atena poté guardare nel riflesso Medusa senza essere pietrificato e tagliarle così la testa con la sua spada.
In questo episodio mitologico le armi dell’eroe rappresentano al meglio i nostri due concetti: la spada, strumento affilato per eccellenza, ed il rotondo scudo divino.
