This device is mainly based on the distance between the centre of the measured object and the axis of rotation that the machinery requires to it: through the rotation angular the device gets the radius of curvature of the object surface.

The most ancient tools to measure and design the roundness of an object are the compass and the goniometer, some exemplary of these ancient objects date back to Ancient Greece. Models in wood or metal were used to draw up the curves on the wood, which was then worked with other machinery to create rounded objects.
