One of the greatest invention of human history is the wheel, rounded object able to turn around a central axis. From the IV millennium B.C. to the 18 th century A.C. wheels were made by wood: in the centuries it was improved lightness, by using the spokes, and rotation, by using iron hub, but the essential raw material for ages is the wood. In 19th century it appears the tyre, a polymeric element that is mounted on the metal structure and it allows to have a better adhesion, a greater endurance to shocks and jolts and it substantially increases trip comfort. The invention of tyre therefore has completely superseded the use of wooden wheels, that in transportation have no more applications: in this case, the industrial product has beaten the craft one.
Una delle invenzioni più grandi della storia dell’umanità è la ruota, oggetto circolare in grado di ruotare attorno ad un asse centrale. Dal IV millennio a.C. fino al XVIII secolo d.C. le ruote erano fatte in legno: nei secoli furono migliorate la leggerezza, grazie all’utilizzo dei raggi, e la rotazione, grazie al mozzo in ferro, ma la materia prima fondamentale rimase per millenni il legno. È a partire dall’Ottocento che fa la sua comparsa il pneumatico, elemento polimerico che viene montato su una struttura metallica e permette una migliore aderenza alla strada, una maggiore resistenza ad urti e sobbalzi ed un sostanziale aumento del confort del viaggio. L’invenzione della gomma dunque ha completamente soppiantato l’utilizzo della ruota in legno, che nell’ambito dei trasporti non trova più alcuna applicazione: in questo caso il prodotto industriale ha vinto su quello artigianale.
